Translation

Summer in Lapland

In Lapland all of nature blooms so quickly,
Dwarf birch and barleygrass on Lappish soil is borne.
These things I have considered long and often,1
when I see2 our people's present mood forlorn.

Why do these things of beauty seek the darkness
and all our treasures great wither away?
Why are our brightest minds consumed by madness?
Why does the kantele's3 song so seldom play?

Why are the best of men so swiftly cut down
as if tall grass, — men of true desire,
men of ideas, men of emotion, all left rotting,
their life's work turned to ashes in the fire?

In foreign lands, grey-hairs glitter in the firelight,
the soul's bright sun, though it be older, seems to bloom.
For us, the newborn babe already seems an old man,
the youthful are preparing for their tomb.

And me, myself? Why do I think this way?
An early sign, perhaps, of old age drawing near.
Why should I not now heed the instinct of my bloodline,
why is the dest'ny of this nation what I fear?

There is but one reply to that: the Lappish summer.
There, in one's thinking, a gloomy fog resides.
These Lappish things are brief: birdsong, and pleasure,
the flowers' blooming-time, and happiness besides.

But winter's reign is long, and for a moment
one's thoughts may take pause here, as if in flight,
then once again they travel south, ever sunward
and leave behind them Lapland's icy night.

O, splendid white birds, guests of the Lappish summer,
auspicious omens, I send my warm regards!
O, would you stay here, might you build your nest here,4
though you return one day to lands of southern stars!

O, from the swan,5 you may learn a hard-won lesson!
She6 leaves in autumn, but here in summer dwells.
For us, our gentle shores are ever calm and peaceful
and safe now are the softly sloping fells.7

May your wings soar across that blue sky, ever onwards!
Attend to your task, light this land vividly!8
But when you see from there that winter here has ended,
I beg of you, I pray: come back to me!

  • 1. 1906 version: 'But often have I known that heavy feeling,'
  • 2. 1906 version is past tense, i.e. 'saw'
  • 3. The kantele is a traditional Finnish stringed instrument, similar to a zither. The kantele has a very important place in Finnish tradition. The story of the first kantele, forged from the jawbone of a pike, is told in the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala
  • 4. 1902 and 1906 versions are roughly the same but the verb 'to make' is imperative - 'make your nest!' - in 1902 and instructive - 'while making your nest' - in 1906.
  • 5. lit. 'swans'
  • 6. lit. plural 'they'
  • 7. 'tunturi', which refers specifically to the fells (fjell, fjäll) of Scandinavia and northern Finland.
  • 8. 1906 version changed to 'mahtavoida', 'make great this land'

Šta god mi nije u redu
Poneću sa sobom u krevet
Tako lako se predajem
Priroda me izujeda
Mali smrt poput olova
Otrovna i teška
Uvek je to bilo tako
Uvek je to bilo tako

Ja sam kažnjena ljubavlju
Ja sam kažnjena ljubavlju

Ujutru
Opet ću se oskrnaviti
Bio je prirodni Ploše - 1
Reče da 'ti ovo nečeš zaboraviti'
Sramota je oštra
I moja koža tako lako popušta
Samo bog zna
Samo bi bog verovao
Da sam ja bila anđeo
Ali su me isterali
Ali su me isterali

Ja sam kažnjena ljubavlju
Ja sam kažnjena ljubavlju
Ja sam kažnjena ljubavlju
Ja sam kažnjena ljubavlju

I Would Never Even Think About Buying Your Books, Packed With Lies Disguised As Good Advice About Life And How To Live It

I would never even think
About buying your books, packed with lies
Disguised as good advice
On life and how to live it

What do you think gives you the right
To fuck up someone else's life
We'd all be much better off
Without your poisonous advice

Making profit from the misery of others
Taking advantage of their insecurity
Encouraging the weak
To lie, cheat and steal

I would never even think
About buying your books, packed with lies
Disguised as good advice
On life and how to live it

You sell instructions step by step
On how to glue the pieces of a
Broken heart back together

There's no point in taking the pain
When you can buy your way out
But where is out?
It's just another room
With one thousand doors

I would never even think
About buying your books, packed with lies
Disguised as good advice
On life and how to live it

You sell instructions step by step
On how to glue the pieces of a
Broken heart back together

There's no point in taking the pain
When you can buy your way out
But where is out?
It's just another room
With one thousand doors

Where's my head going?

I've forgotten everything I once loved.
And I have nothing left to look forward to
I don't want anything, and I don't want to hear your voice
I've lost my strength
Sober thoughts, tired body
I'm so sleepy
A hard morning and a hundred tries to make sense of it all.

Maybe I'm starting to go crazy.
I can't sleep again till morning
I've got a lot on my mind
Maybe I'm starting to go crazy.
Where's my head going?

Art for 100 (skit)

All my hopes are in shreds
Hundreds of empty dreams
I want so much to believe it's not serious
I can run away from the sun
Or hide from the rain
But no matter how hard I try
I can't run away from myself
